6 Human Needs - Tony Robbins

Do you manage people? Do you work with customers, recruit, and retain employees? Do you have a spouse and kids? We all benefit when we invest time in understanding human motivation and fulfillment. One of the frameworks that I have found invaluable over the years comes from Tony Robbins - he refers to it as the 6 human needs. It's a framework of 6 distinct needs that we all possess - to varying degrees and in varying orders. Part of our goal should involve examining our own driving forces, as well as those of the individuals around us, so that we can better serve, support, and lead them.

Here are the 6 human needs:

  • Certainty: This is the need for stability, security, and predictability in life. People seek comfort and assurance in their circumstances to avoid unnecessary stress or risk.

  • Variety: Also known as "Uncertainty," this need involves the desire for excitement, change, and novelty. People also want to avoid feeling stuck in monotonous routines.

  • Significance: People have a need to feel important, unique, and valued. This can be achieved through accomplishments, recognition, or even through destructive behavior if it gets attention.

  • Connection/Love: This is the need for social interaction, relationships, and intimacy. We all seek a sense of belonging, love, and emotional connection with others.

  • Growth: The need for personal development, learning, and progress. People feel alive and fulfilled when they are improving themselves and their circumstances.

  • Contribution: The desire to make a positive impact and give to others, to contribute beyond oneself. This need is often fulfilled by helping others, making a difference, or leaving a legacy.
