One of the Most Important Parts of the Interview Process: The Expectations Dialogue

September 13, 20241 min read

When I flew to Baltimore this week to visit our brokerage, I sat through several meetings with potential new hires. During one of the final steps of the interview process, I was involved in The Expectations Dialogue. This was a powerful reminder of how crucial this step is in the hiring process—and a little convicting of the times I’ve shortcut it!

Here are some of the most important questions that come up in this stage of the process:

  • Honesty Expectations: On a scale of 1–10, with 10 being completely candid, how honest do you want me to be with you? What does that mean to you? Can you give me an example of when someone was that honest with you?

  • Win/Lose Expectations: How does someone win with you? How does someone lose with you?

  • Sensitive Issue Expectations: If a sensitive issue arises, how would you like me to address it with you?

It’s never too late to have these conversations with your team! If you have a team member where there is friction in the relationship, the results (or both), I encourage you to schedule a meeting and discuss the questions above.
