Lead Above the Line: Why I’m Re-reading Conscious Leadership

May 27, 20251 min read

If you lead a team, want to lead a team, or are just looking to grow your leadership lid, here’s a book I’d highly recommend: Conscious Leadership by Jim Dethmer, Diana Chapman, and Kaley Warner Klemp.

It’s been coming up a lot in my conversations lately, with clients, with our team, even with friends. That’s usually a sign it’s time to pull it back off the shelf. So, it’s officially on my “read it again” list.

What I appreciate about Conscious Leadership is that it doesn’t just talk about skills. It’s about awareness, where you’re leading from, not just how you’re leading. The core idea is simple: Are you operating above the line (open, curious, committed to learning) or below the line (defensive, closed, committed to being right)?

That one question alone can transform how you lead.

Some of the best takeaways:

  • You’re always leading from a mindset, conscious or unconscious.

  • Responsibility doesn’t mean blame, it means ownership.

  • Curiosity is more powerful than certainty.

  • Great leaders ask themselves better questions before reacting.

Whether you're managing a team, parenting, or navigating a big decision, this book will challenge and sharpen how you show up.

I highly recommend giving it a read (or re-read). It’s one of those books that grows with you.
