Team Building Tip: Care AND Candor

January 23, 20251 min read

Whether you’re leading a team or nurturing personal relationships, finding the balance between care and candor is essential. As leaders, this balance defines how we build trust, foster growth, and navigate challenges.

I love these insights from Dianna Kokoszka:

  • Caring without candor creates dysfunctional relationships.

  • Candor without caring creates distant relationships.

  • Caring with candor creates developing relationships.

  • Caring values the person, while candor values the person’s potential.

  • Caring defines a relationship, while candor directs it.

  • Caring should never suppress candor, and candor should never displace caring.

Striking this balance isn’t always easy, but it’s vital for growth. Caring establishes trust and connection, while candor provides the clarity and direction needed for development.

What stands out to you? Which of these reminders resonates most with you today? Reflect on your own journey as a leader and think about where you can lean into both care and candor to strengthen your relationships.
